What is PWO Contests?

PWO Contests is a website where photographers can compete in photography contests. You can expect to learn a great deal by participating in contests,  getting feedback on your photographs and meeting other photographers.

What does PWO stand for?

PWO stands for Photo Weekly Online, which is the name of the company that runs this contest site, as well as the photography blog http://www.photoweeklyonline.com

Can anybody join this site?

Yes. Anybody under the age of 18 should seek permission from their parents and/or guardians before joining. Users who are 13 years of age or younger require parent and/or guardian permission before joining (see next FAQ).

Can I enter contests if I am 13 years of age or younger?

Yes you may join PWOContests if you are 13 years of age or younger, as long as you have your parent's or guardian's permission.

Once we have verified that the form has been received, you will be eligible to enter contests.

Do I have to pay to enter contests?

Registration to PWO Contests is free. This will allow you to enter contests for Non-Members. If you wish to participate in the Member challenges, you will need to pay for the yearly membership.

What if I don't receive a confirmation email?

In order to stop spammers and bots from joining our website, we send all users a confirmation email when they sign up. If you do not receive one, go to the following link and enter your email address to have one re-sent. http://www.pwocontests.com/activation.php

How much does membership cost and what are the perks?

The membership fee is $10 for one year, or $18 for two years.

Registered Users are allowed to enter approximately 48 contests per year, have 10 MB of portfolio space.

Members are allowed to enter restricted contests, have 150 MB of portfolio space, and can browse the site ad free. Members are also eligible for year end prizes, including free membership for our top members.

Do I retain the copyright of the images I submit?

Absolutely. You will always retain the copyright of the images you submit. We will never sell or re-use your photographs. By submitting your photographs you are simply allowing us to display your photographs on our website. All photographs submitted will be accompanied by a copyright symbol beside the photographer’s names.

Are there prizes for contest winners?

There are no monetary prizes for the photography contests. However, we will be awarding our best photographers with free memberships. We also plan to have prize giveaways for members at the end of every year. The number of prizes will be determined by the number of active members.

Do I have to use a digital camera?

Yes. All your entries must be taken with a digital camera that has EXIF data. This is how we are able to verify that you have taken photographs during specific dates.

My camera/lens list is empty? What gives?

The first thing you need to do is go to your preferences (Home->Preferences) and add your camera(s) and lenses to your profile. You will now be able to choose them from the list every time you enter a contest.

I cannot find my camera/lens in the list. Help!

If you cannot find your camera or lens in the list of equipment, go to this forum post and let us know. We will update the list ASAP. If you are close to a contest deadline, and your equipment is not listed, temporarily choose another camera/lens. You can fix the details of a photograph once the contest is over.

How does voting work?

During the voting phase of a contest, both Non-Members and Members can cast votes. The order the images appear are random for each person.  The voting scale ranges from 1 (a poor photograph) to 10 (an awesome photograph).  You can also comment on entries during the voting period. In an effort to curb voting irregularities, you must vote on 15% of the entries in a contest for your votes to count. If you do not meet the 15% requirement, your votes will not count. Also, your overall voting average must be between 2.5 - 7.5. If your average does not fall within this range, you will receive a red message on the contest voting page.  We expect you to vote fairly at all times. The voting system is closely monitored. Any attempts to manipulate or change the results of a contest by abusing the voting system will be dealt with swiftly, and may result in disqualification of an entry, freezing of an account, or a permanent ban.

Why was my entry disqualified?

If your entry is disqualified, you will be notified and given a reason. The most common reasons include:
·         Not shooting within the required dates. (always check to make sure your camera’s date and time are set properly)
·         Not following the Editing rules associated with a challenge
·         You have submitted a photograph that was taken by somebody else

Do I physically have to push the trigger for a photograph to be mine?

No. As long as you are in control of the camera framing & settings, someone else is allowed to take the photograph.

How does the points system work?

Points are accumulated based on your finishing position, and the number of people in a given contest. Ex: If there are 100 people in a contest, and you finish 1st, you will receive 100 pts. If you finish 2nd, then you will receive 99 pts, etc.

Can I vote using a tablet or mobile device?

Yes.

Is there a PhotoWeeklyOnline app for iPhone or Android?

Not yet.

Can I change the details of my photograph before, during and after voting?

You can change the details of a photograph as many times as you like during the submission phase. No changes are permitted during the voting phase. Once voting is over, you may change any of the details as you see fit.

How do I link to my profile?

Simply add your username to our url. For example:

How does this website make money?

The 3 ways this website generates revenue are:

  • Through membership purchases
  • Advertisements
  • Affiliate links

The person who runs this site also enters contests? How is that fair?

I am one of the most honest people you will ever meet. I would never use my position to try to get ahead on pwocontests.com.

It should also be noted that:
  1. Contests are randomly chosen from a list, one month ahead of time (with the exception of specialty contests which coincide with calendar events)
  2. If I place in the top 3 of a contest, I am required to submit my original photograph(s) to be judged by other admin, just like everyone else
  3. We do not track the overall averages of photographs. We do track individual votes, but this will only be accessed to determine if there are iregularities in voting.

Can I create more than one account?

No. Creating more than one account is a violation of site rules and can result in being banned from the site permanently.

How do I close my account?

Please consider keeping your account open so other people can discover your photography. If you must close your account, simply go to the Contact Us page, send us a message and we will remove your profile and portfolio. Contest images will remain on the site.
